Friends of Morro Elementary

Join us in advocating for the future of the Historic Morro Elementary site! SLCUSD has deemed the property a surplus property selling the property appraised at 10.2M. Our community came together and convinced our City Council of the value a Morro El acquisition can be for Morro Bay. Due to overwhelming support, Friends of Morro El was born. We are a dedicated nonprofit organization focused on prioritizing the vision of Morro Bay and its residents. Our mission is to preserve the Morro El property, and foster a sense of community and collaboration, while adding it to the National Register of Historic Places. Join in our efforts to create a bright future for our entire community! Together, we can collaborate on an exciting vision that benefits our community for years to come. Get involved and help us ensure this valuable space serves a purpose that enriches the lives of all residents!

UPDATES

MOVING FORWARD! - SLCUSD accepted the City of Morro Bay’s offer for the purchase of Morro Elementary and on March 10, 2026, City Council voted to buy the school site for $5.3 million. We are in escrow and our due diligence has ended. Explore the findings, Projects and Documents on the City’s website. On August 25th our City Council voted to go forward with the purchase. We can now begin to imagine what our new Community Civic Center will look like. Share your creative dreams with us, and join Friends of Morro Elementary in helping finance the Community's vision.

Community members, this is YOUR historic site! Preserving the historic character of the site is part of the very best vision. Email us and share your vision.

Gratitude abounds for Community support.

For decades Morro Bay community members have utilized the sport fields and playground at the Morro Elementary site. Losing the Morro Elementary fields would result in children and adults losing fields to host their games and tournaments.
